The library has about 7500 items of English content, mainly books, but also DVDs and videos and a few talking books.  It is open to all, of any nationality. Next door is the French Library, la Bibliothèque de Dun-le-Palestel.

The Library was the inspiration of Gyn Freeman, who played a major part in its creation. We have also had a great deal of assistance from the Mayor and Commune of Dun-le-Palestel.

So it’s just a library?

No – its much more than that – it’s a meeting place for French and English people in the area.

Coffee is always available and usually biscuits. We also have a range of activities, all of which have both French and English members.

These include:

Café Franglais – meets at 10am on the first Tuesday of each month. Chat, coffee and cakes in English and French. More information from Linda Ward at the library.

Club Scrabble – meets once a month on Monday afternoons at 2.30pm. Dates from September are not yet available. More information from the library

Café Philo – meets on 4pm on Saturday afternoons once a month to engage in discourse and discussion, led by Sylvie Brel. Meetings are planned for 14 November and 12 December.

Sewing Group – meets on Thursday afternoons, led by Edie Green. Alternates with

Art Group – meets on the other Thursday afternoon, led by Chris Hardy. Details from the library

How to find us

We are in the town of Dun-le-Palestel. At the large roundabout in Dun-le-Palestel take the D951 to Aigurande and Bonnat. After passing the Apollo theatre on your left you will see a Renault Garage on your right. Turn down the Rue des Rateries, just before the Renault Garage and you will see on your right a row of temporary classrooms. We are in one of the classrooms, and the entrance is on the opposite side. The kettle will be on and your coffee or tea awaits!

Where do you get your books?

All our books are donated. We welcome all donations of clean paperbacks in good condition, fiction or non-fiction.

Branch libraries

We have a number of associated libraries. Some are commercial establishments who use our books as a service to customers, some are French libraries who have no English books, and one is a true branch library.

They are:

Ars, near Aubusson: we hope to help to open a branch library soon.

Chateauponsac – We have provided an English section for this French communal library.

Roussac - We have provided an English section for this French communal library.

St Sébastien– We have provided an English section for this French communal library.

Le Dorat we have helped to provide books for La Maison Bleue, a shop and café in the square in Le Dorat

Ahun - We are about to provide books for Le Café Recré in Ahun

The Future

This year we have had a number of fund raising events and we are much more financially stable. We hope to improve our kitchen facilities and we are planning to create more shelving – we have several thousand books waiting to go on our shelves.

We may also at last be able to buy some books – there are certain authors we would love to have but have not yet received as donations.

We also plan to create links with the French education service with a view to using the library as a resource for French children learning English. We also plan to develop our children’s library once we have a second room.

We welcome ideas and suggestions for the current library and for the future.

And also if you would like to join the library.
